Denver Traditions

Wanted to quickly post some pics from my recent visit to Denver. My timing was excellent and I was able to spend time with the Rockwoods and the Durants, who were in town for their Spring Break!!

Bev, Jake and I spend a chilly afternoon watching Luke's rugby match. His team didn't actually play but they did scrimmage after the game. We three spectators froze our toes on the bench but Luke and the boys seem unaffected by temperatures down on the field. Hmmm....
Luke and Ryan on the sidelines. Oh, it doesn't look cold but don't let that bright sunshine or the nonchalant young men fool you—we were chilled to the bone!

The rugby team sends their greeting—if you didn't pick him out of the crowd already, Luke is in the white shirt on the left.

The Scone Breakfast—

The Durants arrived late Thursday night and we had scones the next morning (trying to keep Maye's traditions alive!) Bev was only going to take Caitlin and Cricket out of school to join the festivities and the high school boys wouldn't be able to attend due to already missing too many classes. But to our surprise and delight, all four joined us. With the promise of a hearty and delicious scone breakfast, Bev was able to extract extensive promises and concessions from Alec and Luke—hereafter known as the "Scone Breakfast Agreement." And the boys came through on their promises!

Below is a video of the scone eaters saying hello to Shauna, Betsey and Michelle.

You may note that not everyone was saying "hello." The boys thought that a more appropriate salutation would be to just eat scones in lieu of actually speaking a greeting. Cheers to them. You can also hear Jake in the background trying (unsuccessfully I might add) to curtail some of Cricket's enthusiasm. Good to see some traditions never change.

There's Trouble in Arvada & it starts with C

I found this from last March--Mom had told me. Nanci was in town visiting and Nanci, Mom and Jake went to Sacrament Meeting with the Rock's. Mom was sitting one person away from Cricket when the Sacrament was being passed. Mom says that when Cricket got the piece of bread she leaned over to Bev and asked why they never put peanut butter on the bread--or ever give them a chocolate chip cookie.

Nanci went on to tell us that Cricket was her usual self while she was visiting. The Rock's lost the keys to Alec's car for a couple of days and Bev finally found them on Cricket's bed. Bev asked Cricket if she was driving Alec's car and what was she doing. She calmly looked at her Mom and answered, "going on dates...going to the mall...meeting boys!"

Later when Cait told everyone that she did a black run while skiing, Cricket promptly announced, "Well, I skied a puhple!"

My Hopes and Dreams are dashed....

As we all know, after Caitie’s unfortunate mishap with her bookcase, her favorite mantra has become “My hopes and dreams are dashed of becoming a leg model”. Well, after last night, my mantra is going to be, “My hopes and dreams are dashed of becoming a hand model.”
Last night during one of our many snow storms I was out trying to get some things done. I delivered Marian and Bob’s gift and headed over to the Gateway to pick up my final wreath from Starbucks. (They are really cute this year) After picking it up I headed toward the parking lot. Not 10 feet from the door I slipped and fell. I tried to get up quickly—so that no one would see me—but immediately knew that my hand was hurt. A man who was shoveling near by helped me up and I went back into Starbucks. My hand was cut and I grabbed a handful of napkins and started direct pressure. I am so glad that I have watched a number of medical shows—one can pick up such useful tips.
They called security and two guards came and bandaged me up. One of the guards said that I might need some stitches. I was so shocked to hear his comment. I said, “Really? I have never had stitches before.” I thought he must be mistaken so I went to my car and headed right to the store to pick up bandages.
When I arrived home, I asked my roommate Lisa what she thought. Lisa is not an emotional girl but a very logical girl. She said “Are you crazy? Of course you need stitches.” and off we went to the emergency room.
Long story short—I now have 10 stitches in my left hand. I did have to recant my initial statement that I had never had stitches before. I forgot about the car accident the Jen Andersen and I were in Jan 1982. I hit the windshield and had to get 250 stitches. 10 stitches seem so wimpy.
I did make sure that my ER techs and PA’s were well qualified—I also told them that I have watched a lot of medical shows and that they had excellent technique. (The people on the next stretcher started laughing). I also told them that they had better do a good job because I have also watched a lot of "Law and Order" and I would take them to court. Know that all is well and that I am fine. As Derek’s mantra was when he had Hodgkin’s, “Send cash, not cards”
